JC Penney museum in Hamilton Missouri

Highway 36 is often referred to as The Way of American Genius. Names such as Twain, Lear, Litton, Disney, Pershing, Bradley and Still have their roots along Highway 36. Hamilton’s contribution to The Way of American Genius is retail magnate James Cash (J.C.) Penney.

Penney was born in Hamilton in 1875. Young JC Penney left Hamilton in June 1897 to improve his health, but he never forgot his ties to Hamilton and returned often for visits after he became successful in dry goods, contributing capital and instilling pride in the community he loved. When his first employer, J. M. Hale retired, Penney opened the 500th JC Penney store in his hometown.

In addition to his 500th store, Penney also owned the Penney Farm, which became an agricultural showcase known for its cattle, hogs and mules. Award winning animals were often displayed in a corral located inside of the J. C. Penney store.

Penney donated to the town’s first library, the shoe factory, the high school, Highland Cemetery, the American Legion Park and to many other groups and projects in Hamilton.

The J.C. Penney Memorial Library and Museum was built with donations, many from former Penney Co. managers, and dedicated in 1976. The home where Mr. Penney was born and raised was moved into the park in downtown Hamilton and has been restored and furnished as it was in 1875.

The J.C. Penney Museum is located at 312 N. Davis St. Hamilton Mo. 64644. The Penney Boyhood Home is located on E. R. Penney Drive in downtown Hamilton
